Some little brothers chase a shadow. João Nuno chased a world title — and caught it. Born in 2005 into the same Torres Novas swimming tradition as his brother Ricardo — the one who would finish sixth at the Paris Olympics — he grew up a step behind a generational talent. That kind of shadow can flatten a young athlete. It sharpened this one.

He showed his hand early with Junior World silver in 2021. Two years later, on the Hamburg course, he went one better and took the Junior World Championship itself — following his brother to the very same crown, and making the Batistas the only pair of brothers ever to both win a junior world title.

Europe couldn't contain him either: back-to-back European Junior Championships in 2023 and 2024. Dominance at one level always asks the same question — what happens at the next?

That answer is being written now. In 2026 he stepped up to the elite ranks and the World Triathlon Championship Series, swapping junior fields for the senior sharks. The surname already carries weight in Portuguese triathlon. João Nuno intends to double it.
