Story

The pool was a prescription before it was a passion. Born in Lisbon in 2001, Maria was sent to swim as a child after doctors found a heart murmur — water was meant to protect her, not to make her fast. It did both. The sport prescribed for safety became the one she'd build a career on.

Swimming led to triathlon, and triathlon led everywhere. She made her international debut in 2018 and split her life between two clubs and two countries — the Torres Novas swimming scene at home and Valence Triathlon in France. Somewhere along the way the bike became her weapon: where most triathletes survive the ride, Maria attacks it.

The results followed the talent. In 2023 she took silver at the U23 World Championships, announcing herself as one of the brightest young engines in the sport.

Then came Paris. At the 2024 Olympics she climbed out of the water in 39th — and rode the fastest bike split of the entire field, faster than the eventual champion, dragging herself all the way to 11th. Days later she anchored Portugal to fifth in the mixed relay, and that autumn added U23 World bronze in Torremolinos. The girl with the heart murmur had become an Olympic finisher.

She hasn't slowed since — European Cup silver in Quarteira, just 19 seconds off the win, and a place inside the world's top 25, with the next Olympic cycle squarely in her sights. Off the course she reads bodies instead of splits, working toward a degree in physiotherapy.
