Torres Novas is a swimming town. Ricardo made it a triathlon town. Born there in 2000 and raised through its famed Clube de Natação, he carried a small Portuguese river city onto the biggest stages in the sport — and refused to look out of place on any of them.

The talent announced itself early. In 2019 he became World Junior Champion in Lausanne, the clearest possible signal that Portugal had produced something special.

He backed it up through the under-23 ranks, taking European U23 gold in Kitzbühel in 2021 and again in 2023, the same year he added the European Sprint title in Balıkesir. Junior promise had hardened into senior threat.

Paris 2024 was the breakthrough. On his Olympic debut he finished sixth in the individual race and fifth in the mixed relay alongside Maria Tomé, Vasco Vilaça and Melanie Santos — two Olympic diplomas earned in a single Games, and the best week Portuguese triathlon had ever had.

The senior arrival was sealed soon after with his first WTCS podium, a third place in Alghero, Sardinia, that he calls one of the most special of his life. The target now sits higher still: the world's top five, and the next Olympic start line.
